A Statistical Study on the Status of Third Molar Eruption


Abstract
This study is purposed to analyze statistically the state of the third molar eruption in 595 Korean(male;256, female; 339) over 20 years old among out-patients who visited dental department of Sung-Sim Hospital, ChungAng University from 1st May 1980 to 30th Nov. 1981. The results are as follows.
1. It was found that the normal eruption showed the highest proportion(60.1%) among the situations of third
molar eruption and the congenital missing had the second(16.3%), next, in turn, impacted third molar
(11.4%), extracted third molar(6.9%)and others(5.3%).
2. The proportion of normal eruption of third molar was 7-x-8% more in maxillae than in mandible.
3. The proportion of congenital missing of upper third molar was twice as much as that of lower third molar.
4. The proportion of impacted third molar in mandible was 7 times as much as that in maxillae.
5. There was little difference between right and left side in the state of third molar eruption, but distinctive difference between upper and lower jaws.
6. It was revealed that the proportion of subjects with one to four congenitally missing third molars was
33.9% and that of subjects with one to four impacted third molars, 29.7%.
7. The proportion of subjects with bilaterally congenital missing of third molars was 15, 6% ¢¥in maxillae and
6.9%% in mandible. The proportion of bilaterally impacted third molars was 1.0% in upper jaw and 12.8
in lower jaw.
8. Generally, there was no significant sexual differences
